Pulmonary Gas Exchange

Definition: The exchange of OXYGEN and CARBON DIOXIDE between alveolar air and pulmonary capillary blood that occurs across the BLOOD-AIR BARRIER.
Notes: do not coord with OXYGEN or CARBON DIOXIDE unless particularly discussed; DF: PULM GAS EXCHANGE

Pulmonary Gas Exchange Categories.
Pulmonary Diffusing Capacity - The amount of a gas taken up, by the pulmonary capillary blood from the alveolar gas, per minute per unit of average pressure of the gradient of the gas across the BLOOD-AIR BARRIER.
Ventilation-Perfusion Ratio - The ratio of alveolar ventilation to simultaneous alveolar capillary blood flow in any part of the lung. (Stedman, 25th ed)
