Definition: Those psychiatric disorders usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood, or adolescence. These disorders can also be first diagnosed during other life stages.

Mental Disorders Diagnosed in Childhood Categories.
Anxiety, Separation - Anxiety experienced by an individual upon separation from a person or object of particular significance to him.
Attention Deficit and Disruptive Behavior Disorders
Child Behavior Disorders - Disturbances considered to be pathological based on age and stage appropriateness, e.g., conduct disturbances and anaclitic depression. This concept does not include psychoneuroses, psychoses, or personality disorders with fixed patterns.
Child Development Disorders, Pervasive - Severe distortions in the development of many basic psychological functions that are not normal for any stage in development. These distortions are manifested in sustained social impairment, speech abnormalities, and peculiar motor movements.
Developmental Disabilities - Disorders in which there is a delay in development based on that expected for a given age level or stage of development. These impairments or disabilities originate before age 18, may be expected to continue indefinitely, and constitute a substantial impairment. Biological and nonbiological factors are involved in these disorders. (From American Psychiatric Glossary, 6th ed)
Elimination Disorders - Excretory-related psychiatric disorders usually diagnosed in infancy or childhood.
Feeding and Eating Disorders of Childhood - Mental disorders related to feeding and eating that are usually diagnosed in infancy or early childhood.
Motor Skills Disorders - Marked impairments in the development of motor coordination such that the impairment interferes with activities of daily living. (From DSM-IV, 1994)
Reactive Attachment Disorder - Markedly disturbed and developmentally inappropriate social relatedness that begins before age 5 and is associated with grossly pathological child care. The child may persistently fail to initiate and respond to social interactions in a developmentally appropriate way (inhibited type) or there may be a pattern of diffuse attachments with nondiscriminate sociability (disinhibited type). Stereotypic Movement Disorder - Motor behavior that is repetitive, often seemingly driven, and nonfunctional. This behavior markedly interferes with normal activities or results in severe bodily self-injury. The behavior is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance or a general medical condition. (DSM-IV, 1994)
