Definition: Inorganic compounds that contain iron as an integral part of the molecule.

Iron Compounds Categories.
Ferric Compounds - Inorganic or organic compounds containing trivalent iron.
Ferrous Compounds - Inorganic or organic compounds that contain divalent iron.
Iron, Dietary - Iron or iron compounds used in foods or as food. Dietary iron is important in oxygen transport and the synthesis of the iron-porphyrin proteins hemoglobin, myoglobin, cytochromes, and cytochrome oxidase. Insufficient amounts of dietary iron can lead to iron-deficiency anemia.
Steel - A tough, malleable, iron-based alloy containing up to, but no more than, two percent carbon and often other metals. It is used in medicine and dentistry in implants and instrumentation.
