Pituitary Hormone-Releasing Hormones

Definition: Hormones released by one structure (e.g., the hypothalamus or the thyroid gland) that effect the secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland.

Pituitary Hormone-Releasing Hormones Categories.
Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone - A neuropeptide released by the hypothalamus that stimulates the release of corticotropin by the anterior pituitary gland.
Gonadorelin - A decapeptide hormone released by the hypothalamus. It stimulates the synthesis and secretion of both FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE and luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland.
MSH-Releasing Hormone - A polypeptide hormone which originates in the hypothalamus and stimulates secretion of melanocyte-stimulating hormones in the pituitary gland.
Prolactin-Releasing Hormone - A polypeptide hormone that originates in the hypothalamus and stimulates the secretion of prolactin in the pituitary gland.
Protirelin - A tripeptide hormone that originates in the hypothalamus and stimulates the secretion of thyrotropin from the pituitary gland. In humans, it also acts as a prolactin-releasing factor. It is also a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system.
Somatotropin-Releasing Hormone - Hypothalamic peptide that regulates the synthesis and secretion of GROWTH HORMONE in the anterior pituitary gland.
