Heterocyclic Compounds, 1-Ring

Definition:	A class of organic compounds containing a ring structure made up of more than one kind of atom, usually carbon plus another atom. The ring structure can be aromatic or nonaromatic.

	Dioxins - Chlorinated hydrocarbons containing heteroatoms that are present as contaminants of herbicides. Dioxins are carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic. They have been banned from use by the FDA.
	Dioxoles
	Furans - Compounds with a 5-membered ring of four carbons and an oxygen. They are aromatic heterocycles. The reduced form is tetrahydrofuran.

	Oxathiins

	Oxazoles - Five-membered heterocyclic ring structures containing an oxygen in the 1-position and a nitrogen in the 3-position.
	Piperazines
	Piperidines - A family of hexahydropyridines. Piperidine itself is found in the pepper plant as the alkaloid piperine.

	Pyrimidines - A family of 6-membered heterocyclic compounds occurring in nature in a wide variety of forms. They include several nucleic acid constituents (CYTOSINE; THYMINE; and URACIL) and form the basic structure of the barbiturates.
