Gastroenteritis

Definition: INFLAMMATION of any segment of the GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT from ESOPHAGUS to RECTUM. Causes of gastroenteritis are many including genetic, infection, HYPERSENSITIVITY, drug effects, and CANCER.

Gastroenteritis Categories.
Appendicitis - Acute inflammation of the APPENDIX. Acute appendicitis is classified as simple, gangrenous, or perforated.
Cholera Morbus - An old term that is no longer used in the scientific literature. Cholera morbus refers to acute GASTROENTERITIS occurring in summer or autumn; characterized by severe cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Colitis - Inflammation of the COLON section of the large intestine (INTESTINE, LARGE), usually with symptoms such as DIARRHEA (often with blood and mucus), ABDOMINAL PAIN, and FEVER.
Dysentery - Acute inflammation of the intestine asssociated with infectious DIARRHEA of various etiologies, generally acquired by eating contaminated food containing TOXINS derived from BACTERIA, PROTOZOA, or other microorganisms. Dysentery is characterized initially by watery FECES then by bloody mucoid stools. It is often associated with ABDOMINAL PAIN; FEVER; and DEHYDRATION.
Enteritis - Inflammation of any segment of the SMALL INTESTINE.
Enterocolitis - Inflammation of the MUCOSA of both the SMALL INTESTINE and the LARGE INTESTINE. Etiology includes ISCHEMIA, infections, allergic, and immune responses.
Gastritis
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases - Chronic, non-specific inflammation of the GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT. Etiology may be genetic or environmental. This term includes CROHN DISEASE and ULCERATIVE COLITIS.
Proctitis - INFLAMMATION of the MUCOUS MEMBRANE of the RECTUM, the distal end of the large intestine (INTESTINE, LARGE).
