Esophageal Diseases

Definition: Pathological processes in the ESOPHAGUS.

Esophageal Diseases Categories.
Diverticulosis, Esophageal - A pathological condition characterized by the presence of a number of ESOPHAGEAL DIVERTICULA in the ESOPHAGUS.
Esophageal and Gastric Varices - Dilated blood vessels in the ESOPHAGUS or GASTRIC FUNDUS that shunt blood from the portal circulation (PORTAL SYSTEM) to the systemic venous circulation. Often they are observed in individuals with portal hypertension (HYPERTENSION, PORTAL).
Esophageal Motility Disorders - Disorders affecting the motor function of the upper or lower ESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTERS, the ESOPHAGUS body, or a combination of these parts. The failure of the sphincters to maintain a tonic pressure may result in gastric reflux of food and acid into the esophagus (GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX). Other disorders include hypermotility (spastic disorders) and markedly increased amplitude in contraction (nutcracker esophagus).
Esophageal Perforation - An opening or hole in the esophagus as the result of an injury or pathological process. (From Dorland, 27th ed)
Esophageal Stenosis - Stricture of the esophagus.
Esophagitis - INFLAMMATION, acute or chronic, of the ESOPHAGUS caused by BACTERIA, chemicals, or TRAUMA.
