Surgical Equipment

Definition: Nonexpendable apparatus used during surgical procedures. They are differentiated from SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS, usually hand-held and used in the immediate operative field.
Notes: differentiate from SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS in that the instrument is for use in the immediate operative field, usually held in the hand

Surgical Equipment Categories.
Artificial Organs - Devices intended to replace non-functioning organs. They may be temporary or permanent. Since they are intended always to function as the natural organs they are replacing, they should be differentiated from PROSTHESES AND IMPLANTS and specific types of prostheses which, though also replacements for body parts, are frequently cosmetic (EYE, ARTIFICIAL) as well as functional (ARTIFICIAL LIMBS).
Chest Tubes - Plastic tubes used for drainage of air or fluid from the pleural space. Their surgical insertion is called tube thoracostomy.
Orthopedic Equipment - Nonexpendable items used in the performance of orthopedic surgery and related therapy. They are differentiated from ORTHOTIC DEVICES, apparatus used to prevent or correct deformities in patients.
Pessaries - Devices worn in the vagina to provide support to displaced uterus or rectum. Pessaries are used in conditions such as UTERINE PROLAPSE; CYSTOCELE; or RECTOCELE.
Surgical Instruments - Hand-held tools or implements used by health professionals for the performance of surgical tasks.
Surgical Mesh - Any woven or knit material of open texture used in surgery for the repair, reconstruction, or substitution of tissue. The mesh is usually a synthetic fabric made of various polymers. It is occasionally made of metal.
Surgical Sponges - Gauze material used to absorb body fluids during surgery. Referred to as gossypiboma if accidentally retained in the body following surgery.
Sutures - Materials used in closing a surgical or traumatic wound. (From Dorland, 28th ed)
Tampons - Pads or plugs made of cotton, sponge, or other material. They are variously used in surgery to plug the nose, vagina, etc., for the control of hemorrhage or the absorption of secretions. (From Dorland, 28th ed)
Trusses - A surgical device designed for retaining a hernia in a reduced state within the abdominal cavity.
