Cleavage Stage, Ovum

Definition: The embryo in its earliest stage, lasting from the first mitotic division of the fertilized ovum (ZYGOTE) into two BLASTOMERES to the formation of the MORULA, a compact mass of blastomeres.

Cleavage Stage, Ovum Categories.
Blastula - An early non-mammalian embryo (EMBRYO, NONMAMMALIAN) that follows the MORULA stage. Blastula is usually a spherical structure containing a single layer of cells with a hollow cavity.
Morula - The early embryo at the developmental stage in which the BLASTOMERES, resulting from repeated mitotic divisions of the fertilized ovum (ZYGOTE), form a compact cell mass.
