Tissue Extracts

Definition: Preparations made from animal tissues or organs; they usually contain many components, any one of which may be pharmacologically or physiologically active; extracts may contain specific, but uncharacterized factors or proteins with specific actions.
Notes: extracts of organs or tissues or their fractions containing uncharacterized factors; do not confuse with chemical substances "extracted" from tissues, as "peptides extracted from mouse tissue" ( = PEPTIDES /anal + organ or tissue /chem)

Tissue Extracts Categories.
Actihaemyl - An extract from calf blood containing inorganic salts, amino acids, polypeptides and purines, but no proteins nor antigenic substances or blood group characteristics. Its exact composition is unknown. It has been proposed as a radiation-protective agent.
Cell Extracts - Preparations of cell constituents or subcellular materials, isolates, or substances.
Liver Extracts - Extracts of liver tissue containing uncharacterized specific factors with specific activities; a soluble thermostable fraction of mammalian liver is used in the treatment of pernicious anemia.
Pancreatic Extracts - Extracts prepared from pancreatic tissue that may contain the pancreatic enzymes or other specific uncharacterized factors or proteins with specific activities. PANCREATIN is a specific extract containing digestive enzymes and used to treat pancreatic insufficiency.
Placental Extracts - Extracts prepared from placental tissue; they may contain specific but uncharacterized factors or proteins with specific activities.
Thymus Extracts - Extracts of the thymus that contain specific, but uncharacterized factors or proteins with specific activities; three distinct substances are already known: thymotoxin, thymin and thymosin.
