Growth Substances, Pigments, and Vitamins

Definition: A collective grouping for growth substances, pigments, and vitamins.

Growth Substances - Signal molecules that are involved in the control of cell growth and differentiation.
Micronutrients - Essential dietary elements or organic compounds that are required in only small quantities for normal physiologic processes to occur.
Pigments - Any normal or abnormal coloring matter in plants, animals, or micro-organisms.
Vitamins - A general term for a number of unrelated organic substances that occur in many foods in small amounts and that are necessary in trace amounts for the normal metabolic functioning of the body. They may be water-soluble or fat-soluble. (Dorland, 28th ed)
