Analgesics

Definition: Compounds capable of relieving pain without the loss of consciousness or without producing anesthesia.

Analgesics Categories.
Analgesics, Non-Narcotic - Drugs that have principally analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory actions. They do not bind to opioid receptors and are not classified under the Controlled Substances Act. (From Drug Evaluations Annual, 1992, p109)
Analgesics, Opioid - Narcotic or opioid substances, synthetic or semisynthetic agents producing profound analgesia, drowsiness, and changes in mood. Mood changes may be pleasurable, therefore creating a potential for the abuse of these agents; the prototype of these is morphine to which all other analgesics are compared.
