Brain Stem

Definition: The part of the brain that connects the cerebral hemispheres with the spinal cord. It consists of the MESENCEPHALON, PONS, and MEDULLA OBLONGATA.

Brain Stem Categories.
Mesencephalon
Reticular Formation - A region extending from the PONS & MEDULLA OBLONGATA through the MESENCEPHALON, characterized by a diversity of neurons of various sizes and shapes, arranged in different aggregations and enmeshed in a complicated fiber network.
Rhombencephalon - That part of the brain stem constituting the MEDULLA OBLONGATA (myelencephalon) and PONS (metencephalon).
Trigeminal Nuclei - Nuclei of the trigeminal nerve situated in the brain stem. They include the nucleus of the spinal trigeminal tract (TRIGEMINAL NUCLEUS, SPINAL), the principal sensory nucleus, the mesencephalic nucleus, and the motor nucleus.
