Ovarian Diseases

Definition: Disorders of ovarian function. They have varied pathology depending on the phase of the reproductive life from fetal stage to adulthood.

Ovarian Diseases Categories.
Anovulation - Suspension or cessation of ovulation in animals and humans.
Menopause, Premature - Premature cessation of menses (MENSTRUATION) when the last menstrual period occurs in a woman under the age of 40. It is the result of OVARIAN FOLLICLE depletion. Premature MENOPAUSE can be caused by diseases, OVARIECTOMY, RADIATION, chemicals, and chromosomal abnormalities.
Oophoritis - Inflammation of the OVARY, generally caused by an ascending infection of organisms from the endocervix.
Ovarian Failure, Premature - Premature loss of ovarian function that occurs after menarche but before the age of 40. The etiology is unclear. When there are primordial follicles present in the OVARY, premature ovarian failure may be intermittent and reversible. At times, in response to GONADOTROPIN these ovaries produce estrogen and ovulate even resulting in pregnancies.
Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome - Syndrome composed of a combination of ovarian enlargement and an acute fluid shift out of the intravascular space. The enlargement is caused by ovarian cyst formation and the fluid shift may result in ascites, hydrothorax, or generalized edema. The syndrome is most usually seen as a complication of ovulation induction, a treatment for infertility.
